PABLO DESIGN“Lighting is undergoing a revolution at the moment,” says Venezuelan-born designer/entrepreneur Pablo Pardo, who’s leading the disruption with the mix of cutting-edge technology and always-cool minimalism behind his signal brand Pablo. As he puts it, nowadays, “you can build smarts right into the lamp.” Internationally recognized, the San Francisco company was started 20-odd years ago and now Pablo racks up design awards regularly for its more than 40 technology-driven and elegantly sparse collections worldwide. The lighting industry thought-leader credits his upbringing in a family of artists and engineers for the always forward-facing Pablo style, which embraces innovations such as LEDs and flat-panel light. “Lighting is also shrinking in size: LEDs are so small that you can put them almost anywhere,” he adds. “So the standard iconography of a lamp with a shade is being upended.” | |

Maximum function in minimalist form—and using minimal energy. Pixo can fluidly rotate 360 degrees both at the head and stem, for a glare-free focus of warm light: just 6 watts of power—making it 90% more efficient than a comparable halogen light source and 40% more efficient than CFLs. One Pixo lasts for 50k hours or 25 years of daily use! If that weren't enough in a task lamp, the base features a USB port to charge mobile devices. And 97 percent of materials that went into making a single Pixo are recyclable making it an environmentalist dream. | For good reason, Red Dot awarded Pixo its 2012 award. Venezuelan-born industrial designer Fernando Pardo designed the light for his twin brother Pablo Pardo, founding namesake of the San Francisco-based Pablo Designs founded in 1993. The mission: “to create designs that deepen the relationship between objects, their users, and their environments.” Pixo achieves that without a hitch. |
